Just Listen

By Taylor Paone,
Winner—grade 7, Browns River Middle School, Jericho, VT

Listen to me said
the ant to the bee
I have got something
to say about what is happening today.
Listen to me
said the sky to the sea
I am heating up now I just don't understand how
Listen to me
said the car to the tree
I feel this is all my fault,
but I just can't seem to come to a halt.
My eyes drift over the field of green
trying no to recognize
the scattered bottles and plastic bags
that could've been turned into useful cash.
So.
listen to me
said the eagle to the duck
I've seen too many things
flying out of trucks.
If we work together
we can make this right
and save Mother Nature from this terrible fright.
So listen to me
said the ant to the bee
what is happening in May
is called
Green Up Day.

Nature Sings Back

By Hugh North,
Grades K-2 Winner—Grade 1, Stowe, VT

On Green Up Day, the trees will wave their leafy branches at everyone that helps out. The brooks will cheer once trash is all cleaned up on their sandy banks. Waterfalls will crash with delight when they see how many people keep Vermont green.

The mountains will bring more snow in winter to everyone who helps make outdoors a better place. And on Green Up Day, the fields will turn the greenest they can and bees will make honey presents.

I dream that on Green Up Day the chickadees will make peace songs from new nests. Deer will dance in nice clean woods!

I will do my part because it's my job to make Vermont nicer and cleaner on Green Up Day and all year long.

Green Up Day

By Molly Burke,
Grades 3-5 Winner—grade 5, Browns River Middle School, Jericho, VT

I creep out of my den slowly, carefully,
I feel the soft grass beneath my paws,
the warm sun beating upon my head.
I scratch at the dirt in front of me,
hoping to find some good food.
Wait, I found something!
Aww, nothing but a thrown out wrapper.
Humans these days, they think it's right,
to just throw stuff out the window.
Yesterday, I talked to Mother Nature,
She said, "We need help,
we need a plan,
and fast."
I replied, "I want to spread the word,
to pick up litter.
And help make the world a better place.
I can't eat human gum,
or wrappers or cans.
If all around me is trash,
how will I live,
how will I thrive?
We need to find a way to communicate with the humans,
and tell them our problem.
Mother Nature agreed.
As I crept back into my den,
I noticed how beautiful the sun setting on the mountains looked.
And how beautiful Vermont looked.

My Green Mountain Home

By Becky Cross,
Grades 6-8 Winner—grade 8, Bennington, VT

The Green Mountains are my home,
And where the animals are free to roam.
To maintain my state as green and clean,
It takes more than one of us to keep it pristine.

"Green Up Vermont" is here to lead the way,
We must work together to mark this day in May.
Whether young or old, all can do their part,
It doesn't take much to make a fresh start.

To keep Vermont beautiful for all,
We must act now and answer her call.
Her roadsides, her streams, her mountains, and trees,
They will all be grateful and so will we.

The Watcher

By Justin Sola,
Grades 9-12 Winner— grade 11, Mount Anthony Union High School, Bennington, VT

The chair seesaws
Back and Forth, back
Going to fall
And does not fall;

The Watcher regards life
Dark, Dawn, Noon, Dusk, Dark swing by.
Wide eyes, staring at the car's
Occupant, tossing a smoke.
A Perfect Parabola
Ancient apple acre, charred, dead.

The seeds seesaw
Back and Forth, back
Going to fall
And drop on death;

Watching the green growth grow
The rain falls. The Watcher
Catches the car, stops it
Gestures at saplings, grins,
And slowly states, "Green, up."

It's Simple

By Aleta Mathers,
Honorable Mention—grade 1, Newark, VT

I think Green Up is
To clean up.
I think Green Up
Is to clean up.
Oh yes, I do
Think Green Up is
To clean up.
Because it will make the
World more beautiful.
